The results suggest that EGCG may have beneficial health effects in glucose metabolism and endothelial function through modulating HFD-induced inflammatory response.

Our results indicate that polyphenols bind to monomeric tropoelastin and enhance coacervation, aid in crosslinking of elastin by increasing lysyl oxidase (LOX) synthesis, and by blocking MMP-2 activity. Thus, polyphenol treatments leads to increased mature elastin fibers synthesis without increasing the production of intracellular tropoelastin.

In this study, we found that EGCG treatment (2 mg · kg -1 · day -1) dramatically ameliorated the cognitive impairments, reduced the overexpressions of Aβ(1-40) and amyloid precursor protein (APP), and inhibited the neuronal apoptosis in the APP/PS1 mice.

EGCG inhibited the spreading of mouse metastatic LL2-Lu3 lung cancer cells on the fibrinogen substratum, which suggested an impairment in the interaction between cancer cells and fibrinogen. Since the interaction between cancer cells and fibrinogen plays an important role in metastasis, the present results suggest, at least partially, that EGCG inhibited metastasis in the mouse models reported previously by inhibiting such an interaction.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate inhibits cell growth, induces apoptosis and causes S phase arrest in hepatocellular carcinoma by suppressing the AKT pathway.

The results suggest the potential of EGCG as an anticancer agent in the prevention or treatment of HCC.

6.2.      Bronchialkrebs

Epigallocatechin gallate inhibits the growth of human lung cancer by directly targeting the EGFR signaling pathway.

Moreover, long-term EGCG treatment not only inhibited total and membranous EGFR expression, but also markedly attenuated EGFR nuclear localization and expression of the downstream target gene cyclin D1, indicating that EGCG treatment suppressed EGFR transactivation.

6.3.      Prostatakrebs

Enhanced inhibition of prostate cancer xenograft tumor growth by combining quercetin and green tea.

After 6-weeks of intervention tumor growth was inhibited by 3% (0.2% Q), 15% (0.4% Q), 21% (GT), 28% (GT+0.2% Q) and 45% (GT+0.4% Q) compared to control.

The green tea polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), has been shown to have anti-carcinogenic effects in several skin tumor models

 

  1. Sjögren’s syndrom

Epigallocatechin gallate inhibits oxidative stress-induced DNA damage and apoptosis in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice with autoimmune sialadenitis via upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 and Bcl-2.

Overexpression of HO-1 and Bcl-2 mediated by EGCG blocked this pathogenic cycle, subsequently resulting in the inhibition of ROS-mediated DNA damage and apoptosis, and protected salivary gland tissues from oxidative stress. Clinically, green tea catechin may have therapeutic efficacy for Sjögren’s syndrome.

Novel insights of dietary polyphenols and obesity.

Here, we evaluated the impact of commonly consumed polyphenols, including green tea catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallates, resveratrol and curcumin, on obesity and obesity-related inflammation. Cellular studies demonstrated that these dietary polyphenols reduce viability of adipocytes and proliferation of preadipocytes, suppress adipocyte differentiation and triglyceride accumulation, stimulate lipolysis and fatty acid β-oxidation, and reduce inflammation.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate ameliorates both obesity and autoinflammatory arthritis aggravated by obesity by altering the balance among CD4(+) T-cell subsets.

Thus, EGCG has an anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing STAT3 proteins and Th17-cell differentiation. EGCG thus shows promise for treating autoimmune conditions related to STAT3 or Th17 cells, such as metabolic syndrome, inflammatory arthritis, and some neoplastic diseases.
