1.  Haarausfall

Experimental Studies on the Hair Growth Activity of Drynariae Rhizoma Extracts in C57BL/6N Mice

The results were as follows : Hair growth effect of acetone extracts of Drynariae Rhizomas, its EtoAc fraction and n-BuOH fraction was observed in 98 %, 96 % and 60 % in hair removed skin area in 16 day respectively, Immunoreactive density of VEGF in skin of GSB-1 group was weakly stained compare to control group in 10 day, But GSB-2 and GSB-3 groups were mildy stained in bulge and root sheath of skin. Immunolocalization of SCF antigens was observed weakly stained density in epidermis, bulge, stem cells and dermal papilla of control gruop. but in experimental group, immunoreactivity of SCF antigens was observed mildly stained density in bulge, epidermis and root sheath of GSB-1 gruop, heavily stained density in epidermis, bulge and root sheath of GSB-2 and GSB-3 groups to the hair removal skin of C57BL/6N mice on day 10. These experiment suggest that acetone extracts of Drynariae Rhizomas and its EtoAc fraction may be used for topical treatment of alopecia areata.

2.  Osteoporose

  • Dietary supplementation of total flavonoids from Rhizoma Drynariae improves bone health in older caged laying hens.

Results showed that supplying 2.0 g/kg TFRD enhanced the activities of serum total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.01) and glutathione peroxidase (P < 0.05) and had higher femur and tibia bone mineral density (both P < 0.05) compared with the control group. Dietary 2.0 g/kg TFRD also reduced the activities of serum alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.01), tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (P < 0.01), and the contents of osteocalcin (P < 0.01). Furthermore, tibia histomorphology observation showed that the microstructure of bone tissue was improved after TFRD treatment. Egg quality was not affected by TFRD while the egg weight significantly increased (P < 0.01). These findings suggested that TFRD has beneficial effects on bone health in older caged laying hens.

  • Drynaria fortunei J. Sm. improves the bone mass of ovariectomized rats through osteocalcin-involved endochondral ossification.

In comparison, after exposure to the WEK, the ovariectomy-induced reductions in the bone torsion force and bone ash were significantly alleviated. In parallel, results of a bone histomorphometric assay further revealed that the ovariectomy caused significant diminution in the production of prehypertrophic chondrocytes and trabecular bone but enhanced hypertrophic chondrocyte numbers in the growth plate. However, exposure to the WEK lowered ovariectomy-induced changes in these cellular events. As to the mechanism, the WEK increased OCN biosynthesis in bone tissues of ovariectomized rats. Administration of naringin to ovariectomized rats caused significant amelioration of the bone strength, bone mineral contents, and trabecular bone amounts.

  • Drynaria fortunei-derived total flavonoid fraction and isolated compounds exert oestrogen-like protective effects in bone.

DFTF and the three isolated compounds stimulated osteoblastic cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activities in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, they stimulated the ratio of osteoprotegrin and receptor-activator NF-kB ligand mRNA expression, suggesting their involvement in inhibiting osteoclastogenesis. These stimulatory effects on osteoblastic functions were abolished in the presence of oestrogen receptor (ER) antagonist, ICI 182780. The present results suggested that DFTF is effective in protecting against OVX-induced bone loss in mice, and its actions in regulating osteoblastic activities appear to be mediated by ER.

3.  Arthrose

TFRD administration not only enhanced the viability of chondrocytes by itself, but also well restored the damage caused by thiram on growth plate chondrocytes by significantly up-regulating the expressions of BMP-2/Runx2 and IHH/PTHrP. Therefore, this study provides a novel insight into the further treatment of TD and other skeletal ailments and lays the foundation for prevention and treatment.

An Investigation of the Therapeutic Effect of Drynaria baronii Diels on Experimental Osteoarthritis

The purpose of these studies is to observe the effect of renal tonic medications for osteoarthritis. There are two steps in our research work:the first is the preexperiment, which is making a osteoarthritis model of hip joint, from normal quadruped rats to bipedal rats, the second step is to observe the pathologic changes of the expermental groups(feeding drynaria)and control groups(no drugs),by using light microscope, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The morbidity, pathologic changes and time of onset of the experimental groups are lower, milder and later than the control groups respectively.

Naringin and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells repair articular cartilage defects in rabbit knees through the transforming growth factor‑β superfamily signaling pathway

mThese findings demonstrated that naringin helped to promote an improved quality of cartilage regeneration and repair in articular cartilage defects of the rabbit knees. Furthermore, naringin improved the quality of cartilage regeneration and repair in articular cartilage defects of the rabbit knees. In conclusion, naringin, an effective ingredient of the TCM Drynaria fortunei, and BMSCs were able to stimulate the repair of articular cartilage defects in rabbit knees. The combined application of these treatments on joint structural repair and articular cartilage repair quality delivered improved results, which may be closely associated with sustained positive regulation of the TGF-β superfamily signaling pathway and with the directional differentiation of BMSCs into cartilage cells.

Oral administration of naringin alleviated degradation of cartilage matrix and protected against OA development in the surgically induced OA models. Furthermore, the protective function of naringin in cartilage and chondrocyte was possibly due to suppression of NF-κB signaling pathway. Collectively, this study presents naringin as a potential target for the treatment of joint degenerative diseases, including OA

4.  Verhütung

Antifertility efficacy of Drynaria quercifolia (L.) J. Smith on female Wister albino

The result revealed the effectiveness of methanol (87%) and aqueous (68%) extract of the plant on uterotonic activity. The extracts showed relatively non-toxic effect in acute toxicity study. Methanolic extract has shown higher efficacy for both abortifacient (**p<0.01) and anti-implantation performance (**p<0.01) and also effected hormone release level (**p<0.01).

5.  Knochenbruch

Combined treatment with alendronate and Drynaria rhizome extracts : Effect on fracture healing in osteoporotic rats.

The results of our study indicated that all treatment promoted fracture healing and callus formation compared to controls but ALN + DRE treatment showed significantly stronger effects than ALN or DRE alone in histological, X‑ray and biomechanical tests. These results seem to indicate that combined treatment with ALN and DRE has an additive effect on fracture healing and callus formation in osteoporotic rats.

6.  Entzündung

Antioedematous and Analgesic Properties of Fertile Fronds of Drynaria quercifolia.

Oral administration of FF produced significant inhibition of carrageenan and histamine induced paw oedema in Wistar rats. FF significantly reduced both wet weight and dry weight of granuloma tissue which shows the inhibitory effect on exudative and proliferative phases of inflammation. FF significantly attenuated acute and delayed phases of formalin induced pain, acetic acid-induced writhing, capsaicin-induced nociception, and hot plate test in mice. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of coumarins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolics, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids. Total phenolic content was 186 mg/g equivalent of gallic acid. The HPLC estimation showed flavanone glycoside naringin (1.2%) and its aglycone naringenin (0.02%). The presence of potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic principles in FF and their synergistic action may be the reason for the proposed therapeutic effects.

8.  Arthritis/Rheuma

Ameliorative effect of Drynaria quercifolia (L.) J. Sm., an ethnomedicinal plant, in arthritic animals.

quercifolia rhizome water extract at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg reduced the paw thickness and elevated the mean body weight of arthritic rats. The treatment with extract showed a significant reduction in the levels of plasma and liver lysosomal enzymes as well as protein bound carbohydrates and urinary degradative collagen levels. The treatment reduced the levels of ROS and lysosomal enzymes in neutrophils significantly. The significant reduction in the levels of serum pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) and the increment in the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) were also observed by the treatment. The present study supports the traditional claim of using D. quercifolia to treat rheumatism.

9.  Alzheimer

Combined Treatment with Two Water Extracts of Eleutherococcus senticosus Leaf and Rhizome of Drynaria fortunei Enhances Cognitive Function: A Placebo-Controlled, Randomized, Double-Blind Study in Healthy Adults.

The combined treatment of ES and DR extracts significantly increased the figure recall subscore of RBANS (p = 0.045) in an intergroup comparison. Potentiation of language domain ((p = 0.040), semantic fluency (p = 0.021) and figure recall (p = 0.052) was shown by the extracts (in intragroup comparison). In anti-stress response, the anxiety/uncertainly score was improved by the extract in an intragroup comparison (p = 0.022). No adverse effects were observed. The combined treatment of ES and DR extracts appear to safely enhance a part of cognitive function in healthy adults.

10.  Bandscheibenschaden

Therapeutic effects of naringin on degenerative human nucleus pulposus cells for discogenic low back pain.

The human NP cells were successfully propagated in culture and stained positive with toluidine blue staining. Naringin effectively enhanced the cell proliferation at an optimal concentration of 20 µg/mL. Naringin treatment resulted in significant inhibition of TNF-α, but elevated protein expressions of BMP-2, collagen II, and aggrecan. Naringin also increased disc matrix gene activity including aggrecan and Sox6, and decreased the gene expression of MMP3.

11.  Immunschwäche

Drynariae rhizoma increases immune response in mice.

These results suggest that DR improves immune function through the changes in indicators related to fatigue and the regulatory effects on immunological parameters, such as NO and TNF-alpha productions.

12.  Morbus Meniere

Treatment of Meniere’s Disease with A Heavy Dosage of Gu Sui Bu (Rhizoma Drynariae)

In treating Meniere’s disease, author has found thatthe compatible use of heavy dosage of Gu Sui Bu(骨碎补 Rhizoma Drynariae) can produce verygood effect for relieving dizziness, vertigo andtinnitus. Some of the sample cases are cited in thefollowing.

13.  Prostatakrebs

Effects and mechanism of inhibition of naringin in combination with atorvastatin on prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo

Naringin in combination with atorvastatin had a synergistic inhibitory effect on growth in the prostate cancer cell lines PC-3 and LNCaP, and the combination more strongly inhibited migration and invasion than either single drug. The combination of atorvastatin with naringin potently inhibited the expression levels of AR, p-Akt, survivin, p-STAT3, and Bcl-2. However, an increase in the level of p-STAT3 was found in the PC-3 cells treated with atorvastatin and naringin alone, which differed from that observed in LNCaP. Moreover, the level of Bax in the prostate cancer cell lines treated with atorvastatin and naringin was higher than in those treated with either drug alone. Atorvastatin or naringin treatment had an inhibitory effect on the growth of PC-3 and LNCaP tumors in vivo, and this was especially true of the combined treatment.

Drynaria fortunei (Kunze) J. Sm has been widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, and bone healing.

Naringin modulates signalling pathways and interacts with signalling molecules and thus has a wide range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer activities, as well as effects on bone regeneration, metabolic syndrome, oxidative stress, genetic damage and central nervous system (CNS) diseases.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the decoction, pills or powder are used for injuries and bone fractures and osteoarthritis, for pain in loins, weakness in the feet, tinnitus and deafness, toothache, chronic diarrhoea due to kidney deficiency and externally macerated into wine for Alopecia areata and Vitiligo

Double directional adjusting estrogenic effect of naringin from Rhizoma drynariae (Gusuibu)

Naringin and naringenin revealed a double directional adjusting function of estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activities. Both of them showed estrogenic agonist activity at low concentration or lack of endogenous estrogen. On the other hand, they also acted as estrogenic antagonists at high concentrations or too much endogenous estrogen. They produced estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects primarily through selectively binding with ERβ, which could prevent and treat osteoporosis with the mechanism of estrogenic receptor agitation. This paper confirmed the estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activity of naringin and naringenin, and further studies were still essential to study their dose–effect relationship and the anti-osteoporosis mechanism for Rhizoma drynariae in the treatment of osteoporosis and other estrogen deficiency-related diseases.
