In vivo, both the cartilage damage and the elevated expression of MMP-1, MMP-3 and MMP-13 and the decreased expression of TIMP-1 were ameliorated in shikonin intra-articular injection knees compared to vehicle knees. In conclusion, OVX induced fat accumulation in the viscera, liver, and skeletal muscles, mostly due to decreased energy expenditure. PMA+LES treatment in OVX rats normalized fat accumulation by decreasing food intake and increasing energy expenditure through potentiating hypothalamic insulin signaling and restoring normal glucose and lipid metabolism. Therefore, PMA+LES may be useful for alleviating metabolic dysregulation in post-menopausal women.
- Lithospermum erythrorhizon suppresses high-fat diet-induced obesity, and acetylshikonin, a main compound of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, inhibits adipocyte differentiation.
These findings suggest that Lithospermum erythrorhizon prevents obesity by inhibiting adipogenesis through downregulation of genes involved in the adipogenesis pathway and may be a useful dietary supplement for the prevention of obesity.
Our findings suggest that the strategy to apply shikonin as a synergistic agent to cisplatin could be a highly efficient way to achieve anticancer synergism by inducing intracellular oxidative stress. Shikonin may be a promising candidate as a chemosensitizer to cisplatin-based therapy for cancer treatments.
